I The Return

John Galliano is back in the earlier. The Spanish retailer Zara has signed the design legend to a two-year creative partnership which will see him “re-author” the brand’s archives, returning Galliano to fashion after an absence of two years following the fact of bravura and viral sensation that was his final Artisanal show for Maison Margiela in 2024.

While some celebrate his return as an opportunity to bring high-fashion creativity to a wider audience, others question whether the industry is too willing to overlook serious misconduct when the person responsible is exceptionally talented.

II The Question

If a designer produces incredible work, should the fashion industry welcome them back even after a scandal like this?

Weigh it up. Your answer stays on your device.

III Chapter Three

From Couture Royalty to the High Street?

Before the controversy, Galliano was one of the most influential designers of his generation. After graduating from Central Saint Martins in London in 1984, he gained attention for his theatrical approach to fashion, historical references and dramatic silhouettes.

In 2011, Galliano’s career took a dramatic turn when videos emerged of him making antisemitic remarks in a Paris bar. The incident led to his dismissal from Dior, ending his 15-year association with the fashion house. He was later convicted by a French court of racist and antisemitic public insults. Although Galliano apologised and sought treatment for his struggles with addiction, the controversy left a lasting mark on his reputation.

IV Chapter Four

What’s the Deal for Galliano?

Let’s be honest: Galliano doesn’t need Zara to prove that he can design. His career has already established his influence on fashion. What Zara offers is something different:

Reach.

A designer whose creations once belonged largely to the world of luxury fashion can now introduce his ideas to a much wider audience.

Re{form}

His first Zara collection launched in October 2026, exploring the reinterpretation and transformation of existing designs.

But there’s another layer to the story. After years of rebuilding his professional reputation, Galliano is returning through one of the world’s most recognisable retail brands.

Does this mark a fresh creative chapter? Could it help strengthen his position in the industry?

Potentially.

But assuming that the partnership is simply a reputation-rebuilding exercise would be speculation. Whatever his personal motivation, one thing is clear: Galliano is stepping into a very different fashion arena, and the industry is watching.

V Chapter Five

The Zara Equation: Turning Controversy into Commercial Currency

Galliano × Zara debut campaign: two models in dark, theatrical looks

Let’s look at this from Zara’s side. Bringing John Galliano on board is more than a designer collaboration; it’s a statement. Zara is already a global retail giant, but partnering with a designer associated with some of fashion’s most influential couture moments gives the brand a different kind of attention.

Galliano brings something money alone cannot easily manufacture: a distinctive creative identity, decades of fashion experience and a name that gets people talking. Suddenly, Zara is not just selling clothes inspired by the latest trends; it is placing itself in a conversation about design, luxury and creative authority.

And then there’s the publicity. Galliano’s return was always going to attract attention, but his controversial past makes the partnership even more closely scrutinised. For Zara, that attention could translate into curiosity about the collection and strengthen its fashion credentials.

However,

Publicity is a double-edged sword.

Edge one

The same headlines that attract consumers…

Edge two

…can also provoke criticism from those who question the decision to work with him.

The real question is whether Zara can make this collaboration about more than the designer’s name. Will Re{form} deliver a genuinely distinctive design vision, or will the association with Galliano become the collection’s biggest selling point?

VI Beyond the Report

The archive is just stock.

Added context, summarised from Vogue’s November 2026 reporting. These pages are not part of the original report.

The report asks whether Zara can make this about more than a name. Vogue’s reporting shows what the clothes actually are: not a capsule designed from scratch, but Zara’s existing garments, taken apart and rebuilt.

Cut

A long wool-mix coat is cut away at the front. The pockets slide back, the lapels stretch, and the tails creep down the leg.

Rise

A lace-trimmed summer slip inches up the body until it is little more than an extravagant ruffle at the neck.

Where the Zara collection starts. For many people it will be their first Galliano.

Three acts.

Galliano himself divides his career into acts, as Vogue tells it. The Zara contract is two years and four collections.

  1. I

    Saint Martins to Dior

Roughly his first thirty years: from the 1984 graduation collection to the end of his Dior tenure.

  2. II

    Margiela

A decade at the house, from 2014 until he left in 2024.

  3. III

    Re{form}

The Zara partnership: two years, four collections. By his own account, he wanted it to be fun.

Les Incroyables

The 1984 Saint Martins graduation collection that launched him took its name from les Incroyables, the dandy rebels of the French Revolution, and their female counterparts, les Merveilleuses.

Forty-two years later, Vogue reports, the silhouettes that emerged as he cut and reshaped Zara’s clothes led back to exactly those characters: cropped tailcoats, high collars, bonnets and cravats. The same theme, reached again through everyday Zara garments.

How the deal came together

  1. 2022

    An exhibition in La Coruña

Galliano meets Marta Ortega Pérez, non-executive chair of Inditex and the force behind Zara’s collaborations, around a Steven Meisel exhibition at her foundation. She asks about a collaboration. His first answer: no.

  2. 2024

    The pause

He leaves Margiela and goes quiet. The two keep meeting for lunch, and he floats a concept called Re{form}. This time she says yes.

  3. Jan 2026

    In secret

Work begins in a Paris-suburb atelier, in strict secrecy.

  4. Mar 2026

    The announcement

Zara announces the partnership. The reaction, Vogue notes, runs from ire to incredulity to intrigue.

  5. Oct 2026

    Volume one

Re{form} Zara Authored by the Couturier John Galliano goes on sale on 1 October. The long name is partly legal: LVMH still owns the John Galliano brand name.

The other half of the story

The weeks before the launch brought a second headline. Galliano announced, together with the Metropolitan Museum of Art, that a planned career retrospective would not go ahead. He said he remains accountable for the pain his past words caused, particularly to the Jewish and Asian communities, and that an exhibition honouring his work would be painful for some. Vogue also reports that he is now fifteen years sober.

Which brings us back to the question this report began with.

The last word

Because in today’s fashion industry, the right name can sell a story before a single garment reaches the shop floor.
